Read the route ↓This one covers serious distance, and a campervan isn't the nicer way to do it — it's the practical one. If time allows, head inland first: red dirt roads and a stretch of nothing that's somehow the whole point, kangaroos loping past wild, one or two other cars passing all day. Stop on the shoulder for five minutes and someone will pull over just to check you're alright. The camp spots out here are some of the best of the whole trip.
Then the drive toward Cairns, where the country changes in a matter of hours — desert to rainforest, seemingly overnight. This stretch holds the world's oldest rainforest, older than the Amazon by tens of millions of years, with plenty inside it worth seeing, though not everything that gets advertised is equally worth the stop.
If you dive, the Great Barrier Reef is unmissable — and even a single day of snorkeling shows you more than you'd expect. Night dives are their own thing entirely: reef sharks turning up wherever your flashlight points, entirely unbothered.
The coast between here and Sydney is dense with stops — surf towns, waterfalls, afternoons by a riverbed with locals before jumping into water clear enough to see straight to the bottom.
