Fiji
For divers and surfers who want the version of Fiji that isn't fenced off — reef and jungle over resort loungers, with the option to genuinely disappear for a while.

Read the route ↓Fiji's iconic white-sand islands are the ones everyone's seen in photos — plenty of them are private resorts you'll never set foot on, some reportedly owned by people who'd rather not be found (a reclusive tech billionaire among them). What they can't fence off is the reef around them — a boat or a snorkel gets you close enough to see living coral most guests never will, water clear enough to see the reef structure from the surface.
A 4×4 and the right planning gets you onto tracks that put you close to how people actually live here — modest homes tucked into hillside greenery, empty windswept beaches with nobody on them, nothing built for a photo.
You can get properly lost out here, on islands with barely a road sign — hopefully not for as long as that castaway in the movies.
If you surf or dive, this is genuinely world-class — one of the longest rides you'll find on a board, and a lagoon dive where bull sharks move through in numbers dense enough to blot out the reef behind them, clouds of reef fish parting around you, a stingray gliding past over white sand.
